Year-End Reflections Filled with Gratitude

Friday, December 30th, 2011

As we say good bye to 2011 and look forward to the future with anticipation, I think it is important to say thank you to all those individuals and organizations who have contributed to BOWEN’s success this year. Simply put, 2011 was an incredible year. We are so thankful for the opportunity to work with many of Canada’s top companies, providing workforce solutions that contribute to their productivity and profitability. Whether it was providing recruitment services, flexible workforce management or outsourced human resources, our clients continue to look to us to provide innovative, effective staffing solutions, and we thrive on the challenge.

As the job market rebounded in full force, our recruitment team was privileged to work with talented candidates, placing hundreds of people into temporary and permanent roles across many different industries. We look forward to continuing to connect bright people with bright futures next year.

This year also saw BOWEN move into new offices in the Beltline district and refresh our corporate identity. However, perhaps we were most excited about the launch of our formal community investment program and SHINE Fund. While we have always been deeply committed to giving of our time and resources to make our community a better place, this year we kicked it up a notch by giving approximately $55,000 to help vulnerable families.

We gave the gift of food by supporting the Community Kitchen of Calgary. This means that kids who are going to school hungry received nutritious, delicious lunches, and had the chance to learn about proper nutrition so they can teach their families how to eat well and make wise food choices. Partnering with Boardwalk Equities and Parks Calgary Foundation, we built a fully accessible playground in the community of Alberta Park where kids of all ages and abilities have a fun, safe place to play and families have a beautiful playground to enjoy together with their neighbours. We also gave the gift of hope as a presenting sponsor of the Scott Smed Invitational Golf Tournament. In addition to supporting Community Kitchen and Parks Calgary, money raised at this tournament went to infancy and pregnancy loss programs that offer comfort and care to families who have gone through the traumatic experience of losing a newborn child.

On behalf of the BOWEN team, I would like to extend our deepest thanks to our clients, candidates and partners who made 2011 an incredible year. Happy New Year to all of you and we look forward to achieving even greater things together in 2012!

Great Connections Build Great Career Success

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

After a brief hiatus, I am pleased to be blogging again! The past few months have been incredibly busy at BOWEN. As I mentioned in previous posts, we moved offices, launched a new logo and created our Shine Fund, which is dedicated to helping families in need and creating a community where everyone shines. Of course, during this time, all of our day-to-day business operations have continued on at their regular fast pace. The Calgary job market is definitely on the upswing and we are seeing an increase in optimism and opportunities.

Our work at BOWEN is really all about connecting people. I think our new tag line of “Bright people. Bright futures.” nicely sums up our team’s purpose. We want to connect high-calibre candidates with the right job opportunities, and at the same time, introduce our clients to Western Canada’s top talent. Of course, we do much more than that through our other services such as Flexible Workforce Management and Outsourced HR. However, at the core, we want to create and build connections that create success for everyone, whether it is an individual, corporation or one of the amazing non-profit organizations that are dedicated to making our community a better place.

With Stampede starting tomorrow, there will be plenty of opportunities for networking, building connections and of course, having fun. Have a look at my July 9, 2010 blog post for some tips on how to make the most of your Stampede events. Feel free to contact the BOWEN team if you’d like to learn more about how great connections lead to greater career success.

BOWEN Launches On-Line Just in Time for Twestival!

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

There are times when the stars seem to align and the perfect opportunity comes along at just the right time. Such is the case with BOWEN’s sponsorship of Calgary’s Twestival on March 24, 2011.

In my blog, I’ve written several times about how important an online presence is to your job search. As a workforce solutions company, BOWEN recognizes the huge potential for online recruitment opportunities as well. Over the past several months, we’ve been working hard behind the scenes to prepare to introduce our new logo at the same time that we launch corporate Twitter, Facebook, Linked In and YouTube accounts and today is the day! While our new website isn’t quite ready for a reveal, it’s also coming soon.

When the opportunity to get involved as a sponsor of Twestival came up, it was easy to get involved and part of our social media rollout. If you don’t know about Twestival, please check it out at http://calgary.twestival.com/

Twestival was created by a woman from Calgary, and was born to bring Twitter users together in support of local and international initiatives. Since then, over 200 cities have participated in Twestival, raising close to $1.2 million for important global and local causes like clean water and education. This year, Twestival will be held on March 24th and the Calgary event will support Making Changes, a great organization that “empowers women by providing knowledge and a selection of work attire for their transition into the workplace”.

Giving back to the community by supporting organizations that help families in need is a priority at BOWEN and sponsoring an event that helps women enter or re-enter the workforce aligns closely with our community investment philosophy.

I’m excited about the event, about ramping up our online activities and about connecting with many of you through our social networks. Please take a minute and get connected with the “new” BOWEN!

Summer Job Search Starts Now

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

With our frigid weather, it may be difficult to imagine that spring - and even summer - are not that far off. For post-secondary students, this means that it’s not too early to start you summer job search. Thankfully, the job market is stronger than the previous two years, and trends indicate more opportunities will be available.

Before you start looking, make sure that you have a look at your resume with a fresh set of eyes. Are there new accomplishments or experiences that you need to include? What about volunteer activities? Invite a couple people to review your resume and offer feedback. Have you included important key words that will resonate with the job type and industry you are interested in? Remember, it is your calling card and the first step in opening the door to that next great job.

Next, let your contacts know that you have started to look for the summer. Also, make sure that you are utilizing all the social media channels available, especially Linked In and Facebook, which are great ways to connect professionally. Start checking out job boards and companies that may offer summer intern programs. Register with a staffing company like BOWEN. Think about potential interview questions and how you would respond. Get your references confirmed so that when that next job comes up, you are prepared.

Be open to the possibilities and good luck with your search.

Holiday Season Wishes to All

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010
I love this time of year. There is something magical about the holiday season. Although our “to do” calendars seem more full than ever (if that’s possible) with social events, school concerts, kids’ activities and of course, all of our regular work responsibilities, it is a great time of year to connect with colleagues, friends and family. It’s also the perfect time to reflect on the past year.

2010 was an incredible year at BOWEN. While the organization has undergone many changes, we’ve also been blessed with many new and exciting opportunities. I am immensely proud of our team and thankful for their talent, experience and dedication. We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with so many great clients representing many of Canada’s top companies. We are also privileged to help talented people find jobs that are the right fit for their lives. I have been at BOWEN for 26 years and I still find it incredibly rewarding to do what I do every day! I am also deeply thankful for the chance to give back to our community in a meaningful way that can help make the lives of needy families just a little easier.

Calgary is an amazing place to live and work!

I wish all of you an enjoyable holiday season and hope that 2011 will be an incredible year for us all.

Today’s post is a personal one for me. On Monday, Sept. 13th my husband, Peter and I, will host the 10th Annual Scott Smed Golf Memorial Tournament. You can read more about our story at www.scottsmed.com.

PREPARING FOR FUN IN THE SUMMER SUN

Monday, July 26th, 2010

 summersun

We just had a sunny weekend and according to the Weather Network we will continue to have sunny days right into the upcoming long weekend. This is welcome news after the cool start to the summer we have had.

I am really looking forward to some downtime with my family as we go on vacation. However, if you are like me, the time leading up to vacation and the time immediately following can be really hectic. I’m hoping this time around will be different and have sourced a few tips to help with the work/vacation /work transition.

Prepare early, You mark on your calendar and start dreaming of your vacation in advance so in turn, start preparing for your work departure just as early. Notify co-workers, arrange for coverage in your absence and start compiling a list of items that need your attention before leaving. The added time to prepare relieves stress and ensures items are not missed.

Do not forget the basics. Some tasks will need to be done before every vacation such as recording your out of office voicemail and setting your out office email message. Your work may have a standard list of pre-vacation policies. If so, make sure you are aware and adhere to them.

Make a vacation preparation list. Lists in general are a great way to stay on track and with each item you check off you are that much closer to fun in the sun.

Schedule a buffer day. It is not always possibly but if you are able, you should schedule in a home day between when you get back from vacation and when you start work. On this buffer day you can adjust your sleep schedule, re-stock on groceries and other tasks. This will make sure that on your first day back at work your mind is focused and you are ready to work.

Leave yourself notes on projects that you will be continuing with when you return. This way you will be back up to speed more quickly and can hit the ground running. Also, if you have them written down at work you can put them out of your mind when on vacation.

Do you have any vacation tips? I’d love to hear them!

Stampede Parties Can Help Your Career - Really!

Friday, July 9th, 2010

It’s that time of year in Calgary when business takes on a whole new look and feel. Business attire is replaced by western garb like jeans, belt buckles (the bigger, the better), plaid shirts, boots and of course, cowboy hats in a ranges of styles and colours. Instead of chasing deadlines and hosting meetings around the boardroom table, there are countless opportunities to connect with customers, partners, suppliers and even competitors over pancakes, barbeque beef and of course, beer!

Much has been made of how Calgary business “shuts down” over Stampede. Whether it’s true or not, Stampede is the perfect time to build your network and make new professional contacts. It can be a time of year that can help build your business or grow your career opportunities if you follow some simple advice:

- Watch your alcohol! With the fun atmosphere and back-to-back parties, it can be easy to overdue it. Remember, if you are with people you know professionally, you will have to face them again in a business environment so keep your drinking in check.

- Don’t forget your business cards! Simple as it may seem, don’t forget to slide a few cards into your jeans. You never know who you will meet in your “Stampeding” travels.

- Ask for cards. Even in a party setting, you may encounter someone who is a potential customer or contact. Ask for their card and don’t forget to follow up when Stampede rolls out of town for another year.

A lot of the advice that applies to what to do at corporate Christmas parties, also applies to Stampede. Have fun and be safe!

Hats off to everyone in the staffing industry!

Monday, June 7th, 2010

This week is Staffing Week in Canada, and I’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the incredible team of staffing professionals at BOWEN, as well as the employers who come to us seeking assistance for a wide variety of workforce needs, and to the job seekers who ask for our help with their careers.

I recently celebrated my 26th anniversary with BOWEN and can honestly say I still love coming to work each day. This is a dynamic and challenging industry, that is also very rewarding. There is such satisfaction in helping people find a job that will carry them along their career path and balance their work / life responsibilities! At the same time, I am honoured that so many of Canada’s top companies have trusted BOWEN’s experience and expertise, and invited us to essentially become part of their human resource and business teams.

The past few years have been particularly challenging for the staffing industry, as we were so directly impacted by the economic downturn and the effects on business. However, there is a positive shift happening and I know that regardless of what the future holds, we will continue to give our best to the employers and job seekers who want our help. Congratulations to all who are part of the staffing industry and enjoy the week!

A New Year…A Fresh Start

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

I love New Year’s!  It’s exciting to symbolically leave the previous year behind and look forward to all that the next 12 months has in store! For many, 2009 was an extremely challenging year with the declining economy, job loss and significant corporate cutbacks. Looking ahead to 2010, there is cautious optimism that job market will start to open up with new opportunities as the economy starts its slow recovery. Rebuilding takes time, but change is good.

Over the past few years, I’ve had the pleasure of speaking to various groups about change and thought it was very appropriate to share just a few of my favourite inspirational quotes as we look ahead to the new year with anticipation.

“Life isn’t just about what you can have; it’s about what you have to give. What kind of person do you want to be? Start asking these questions and thinking about the bigger picture-why you’re here, why the world needs what you have to offer. What I know for sure: You keep asking the right questions of yourself, and the universe and your own secrets will unfold in ways you never imagined.” - Oprah Winfrey

“If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude. “ - Maya Angelou

“You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” - Mahatma Gandhi

“Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” - President Barack Obama

 Happy New Year!
