BOWEN ON THE MOVE

February 18th, 2011

I am excited to share with you that BOWEN is on the move. After operating in Calgary’s downtown core for 37 years, we are moving to the Beltline area (Suite 700, 602 - 12 AVE SW), which will be our new home effective February 28, 2011.

Our move coincides with many new developments at BOWEN, including a new logo, expanded service offerings and new opportunities for both our candidates and clients.

It is going to be a change for us but to put things in perspective, our new office is only four blocks from our current location. Without a doubt, the next couple weeks will be a little chaotic with all of the moving preparations (our office is a bit of a mess with all the boxes right now), however, it is still business as usual leading up to and during our move. You will still be able to reach us through our existing phone and email contacts, including our main number of 403-262-1156 and info@bowenworks.ca.

Thank you for your patience and I look forward to sharing more about our new BOWEN in the posts to come!

Talented Terrors are Toxic in the Workplace

February 4th, 2011

It may not be a topic that gets a lot of attention, but it should. Talented terrors are a workplace reality. Their skills and abilities make them superstars, but their attitudes leave a lot to be desired. Talented Terrors can deliver excellent results but their attitudes damage morale and destroy teams. They actually believe you can’t manage without their brilliance.

Talented Terrors will push you to the limit to see how much they can get away with. They drain all your energy making it difficult for you to deal with them. They do not nor do they want to give 100%. Whether you work with them or supervise them, you need to manage them. They need to be held accountable for their actions so they don’t drive the productive employees away.

What can you do to turn this situation into a win-win for all? BOWEN is going to tackle this tough topic at our next “Building a Better Workplace” seminar series in February. Judging by the incredible response and the sellout of three seminars, this is one hot topic that managers have been struggling with for years. We promise to run more seminars in the near future and will post a few highlights from our discussion later this month.

If you’ve got a toxic talented terror on your team, there is hope! With the right approach and resources, you can turn things around. Stay tuned.

2011 Off to a Fast Start

January 31st, 2011

It’s been a while since I’ve posted and I must apologize for the silence! We’ve jumped into 2011 with both feet and are under some tremendous - and very exciting - changes at BOWEN. In the weeks to come, more details will be revealed, but suffice to say, it’s been keeping our entire team moving at full speed ahead, including myself. I can’t wait to share our new developments with you, but in the interim, I promise to return to a more regular blog postings again. Holiday Season Wishes to All

December 8th, 2010
I love this time of year. There is something magical about the holiday season. Although our “to do” calendars seem more full than ever (if that’s possible) with social events, school concerts, kids’ activities and of course, all of our regular work responsibilities, it is a great time of year to connect with colleagues, friends and family. It’s also the perfect time to reflect on the past year.

2010 was an incredible year at BOWEN. While the organization has undergone many changes, we’ve also been blessed with many new and exciting opportunities. I am immensely proud of our team and thankful for their talent, experience and dedication. We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with so many great clients representing many of Canada’s top companies. We are also privileged to help talented people find jobs that are the right fit for their lives. I have been at BOWEN for 26 years and I still find it incredibly rewarding to do what I do every day! I am also deeply thankful for the chance to give back to our community in a meaningful way that can help make the lives of needy families just a little easier.

Calgary is an amazing place to live and work!

I wish all of you an enjoyable holiday season and hope that 2011 will be an incredible year for us all.

Survival Tips from a Mompreneur

November 3rd, 2010

I am very honoured to be selected as one of this year’s Top 50 MOMpreneurs® by the MOMpreneur® Networking Group Inc.  I love how Frances Wright, CEO/Publisher of the MOMpreneur® magazine, explains what we do: “Mompreneurs are dedicated to raising their families while growing their businesses. They have overcome many obstacles because they are well prepared, focused, persistent, energetic and innovative. With the advance of technology, these entrepreneurs conduct business around the clock and around the globe.”

Like any working mom, I have those harried days when I am trying to keep on top of the busy schedules of our two active daughters, while also managing the many things that go on at BOWEN on any given day. Over the years, I’ve come up with a few rules to live by, which help me keep it all in perspective:

- Remember having it all means something different to everyone. Don’t start comparing alls rather define yours and then work to it.

- There are no rules that suggest you can’t blend work, life, family and community. Women tend to compartmentalize their lives. For me to have it all I have  engaged my children in Charity. My charity in business and my friends as my clients.

- Always make time for yourself - having it all doesn’t mean loosing you.

- If you have children remember they are watching. I can’t tell you how many people complain of their work, lives, family….and then wonder why their kids  don’t walk the same path.

Above all, keep a sense of humour and whatever madness is going on in the moment, know that this too shall pass and a lot of the things that get us stressed out make for some great stories down the road.

How to get started…incorporating diversity into your workplace

October 15th, 2010

In my Oct. 12th blog post, I wrote about why diversity makes good business sense. A diverse workforce will make an organization stronger for many reasons:

·         Including immigrants increases your organization’s talentpool.

·         It makes good business sense to have a workforce that represents your community and customer base.

·         A diverse workforce brings fresh ideas and new approaches and can open doors to international opportunities.

·         A diverse workforce brings a global competitive advantage through international networks, cultural knowledge and language skills.

·         Immigrants can be very loyal opportunities, improving your retention rates and improving your recruitment and training costs.

So now you may be convinced to start planning, or you may need more information. Either way, there are several places to get started in creating a new – and brighter – future for your organization.

  • Become a corporate partner in the Calgary Regional Immigrant Employment Council’s mentoring program or learn more about this great organization that builds pathways between employers and skilled immigrants. Visit www.criec.ca for information.
  • Get involved in Networking for Success events where you can meet with internationally trained professionals. These events are hosted by Calgary Catholic Immigration Society and the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. Call (403)290-5116 for information.
  • Show your leadership by becoming a pilot organization for the Map to Meaningful Employment.

All of these opportunities are part of the Shell Immigrant Employment Program and you can find out more by contacting jaime.enachescu@calgaryunitedway.org

Women of Influence Award Nomination is a True Honour

October 13th, 2010

I am deeply honoured to be nominated for a Women of Influence award. This award is presented annually in acknowledgement of women who are making a difference in communities across Canada. Giving back is something that is really important to me and my family. I love giving of my time and resources to worthwhile organizations that are truly making our community a better place for everyone.

For the past 10 years, my husband, Peter and I have raised money for women and children in need in community, by hosting the Scott Smed Memorial Golf Tournament, in honour of our son. To date, we’ve raised over $600,000 with the help of incredible sponsors and friends. This has been one of the most amazing and inspiring experiences of my life.

I love reading stories about people who have a heart for philanthropy. I hope you will be inspired by what you read here: http://survey.womenofinfluenceinc.ca/TakeSurvey.aspx?SurveyID=l2LH874  and I encourage you to take the time to vote for the women you connect with…

Voting ends Oct. 15, 2010.

Diversity Makes Good Business Sense

October 12th, 2010

One of the things I am very passionate about is promoting the importance of diversity in the workforce. Several years ago, BOWEN piloted at program called Immigrant Works with the Government of Alberta and corporate Calgary. Its purpose was to encourage employers to hire from the tremendous skilled foreign worker talent pool.

Today, I am thrilled to be chairing the Adult Immigrant Initiative for the United Way of Calgary and Area, and involved in the Shell immigrant employment project.

Unemployment numbers are slowly creeping downward, and in the very near future there will be shortage of qualified candidates to choose from for a variety of different roles across many industries. Smart employers are already looking ahead with workforce plans that include a diverse employee pool.

The Canadian workforce is rapidly changing. Just consider the following facts:

·         Canada’s workforce is shrinking, babyboomers are retiring and our birthrate is low;

·         By 2011 immigrants will account for 100% of the growth of the workforce;

·         Demand is increasing for skilled labour.

(Source: Shell Immigrant Employment Project)

Thankfully, Calgary attracts some of the brightest skilled foreign workers:

·         Nearly 24,000 new immigrants from 120 countries arrive in Alberta each year; close to 60% settle in Calgary;

·         Calgary attracts immigrants that are often more educated and highly-skilled than other Canadian cities;

·         45% of immigrants arriving in Calgary hold a Bachelor’s degree or higher;

·         50 % of immigrants in Calgary with post-secondary credentials are not using their skills and experience;

·         Most frequent problems in finding employment include lack of Canadian work experience, lack of contacts in the job market, lack of recognition of foreign qualifications and experience and language barriers.

The numbers speak for themselves. Understanding and embracing the skilled foreign workforce will be key to future business success. In my next blog post, I’ll talk more about how diversity can strengthen an organization and how Calgary companies can get involved today.

Career Advice from Oprah

August 25th, 2010

The September edition of O - The Oprah Magazine has some great job search tips for women (although the ideas certainly can apply to men too). Focusing on four different scenarios, the article “Hire Power” offers suggestions on how to go after that dream job. A few of the highlights include:

  • Regrouping after a layoff - focus on metrics and accomplishments in your resume and include a summary of qualifications.
  • Foot in the door - include positive quotes from references within your resume.
  • Exiting the mommy track - highlight the impact of your volunteer work and include quotes from parent council colleagues.
  • Switching gears - consider removing dates from a lengthy resume to avoid giving the impression that you will be very “expensive” based on length of career and experience.
